Frequently asked questions
What does “verfahrensfrei” (exempt from the permit procedure) mean?
A project that is “verfahrensfrei” may be built without a building permit procedure. The state building codes list conditions for this, for example regarding size. Some states say “genehmigungsfrei”. Exempt does not mean that no rules apply.
Is “exempt” enough to simply start building?
No. An exempt project must still comply with public law requirements, for example setback areas, the development plan, heritage protection and neighbour law. If in doubt, ask your local building authority.
Which German states does the calculator cover?
The calculator only shows states whose building code we have verified against the official text. Currently that is 16 of 16. If your state is missing, we say so honestly. The status per state is on the “Method” page.
Does the calculator replace advice from the building authority?
No. The calculator is a guide, not legal advice. Every answer names the provision, its wording and a link to the official text so that you can check it. Only the answer of your building authority is binding.
